Free Teaching Resource-August Calendar -Smart Notebook August Calendar

August is here!  Soon it will be time to go back to school.  Many teachers are busy decorating their classrooms and preparing for the first day of school.  Gone are the days when school began after Labor Day.  Today, many schools open a week or two before Labor Day.  To celebrate the beginning of a new school year, I decided to create an August calendar freebie packet.  In addition to the PDF packet, there is a SMART Notebook file that can be downloaded separately.  It is also free!  The SMART Notebook file can be used if you have this type of software available in your school.  You will need to use SMART Notebook 11 for the file to work properly.  A lower version of SMART Notebook will be incompatible.

I am happy to let you know that the graphics I used for both the PDF file and the .notebook file were created by Laura Strickland.  Her website is:  mycutegraphics.com

These files will download separately.  This packet is appropriate for first and second grade levels.  It is designed to help the teacher meet the following Common Core State Standard:  1.MD.C.4 - Measurement & Data Points.  Some of the images appear blurry due to compressing the file for faster web viewing.  They will not look this way when you open and print the file.  Here is what you get with the PDF:

You get an August calendar for the children to refer to when they are answering the questions from the other pages. Make enough copies of this so each student has one.

You also get a partially numbered calendar. Make copies and have the children fill in the missing numerals. This could be used as a quick assessment at the start of the school year to see which of your students can form numerals correctly as well as complete a numeric sequence. (I used the ABC Print font from Fonts4teachers for the numerals shown here.)

Students fill in the bubbles with the correct answer.  There isn't visual provided within the PDF to permit the children to know what will happen on August 21st from question # 3.  It will be up to the educator to think of an event for that date or she can use fact that there is a full moon on this date.  There is a visual provided in the SMART Notebook file for this.

There is a small scale version of the calendar on this page for the students to refer to.

Here is the link that gets you to everything above.  Calendar-Skills-Printables-August 2013

Below are some slides from the SMART Notebook file.  There are a few review slides which I did not show here.  You have my permission to change the background color I used if what is shown does not suit your needs.

The numbers on this slide will move on and off the calendar.  Create your own calendar activities with this slide.

I used the object animation tool to create ovals that appear to change colors.  When an oval is touched, its color will appear to change to red or green.  An oval beside the correct answer will become green.  An oval that is incorrect will become red.

The numbers on the calendar shown on this slide will not move.  It is a screen captured image from the original.

Before students can answer questions # 1 and # 2, they will need to have an understanding of the concept of "first" and "last".  A good activity to complete beforehand is to play "Shuffle the Line".  Have the children form a line.  Ask a child to name the person that is first in line.  Ask another child to name the person that is last in line.  Have the children walk around the classroom.  Then have them get in line again.  Ask the questions again.  "Who is first in line?  Who is last in line?"  Repeat at least one more time.

Can't wait for the full "Blue Moon" although this one appears to be yellow.

I used the transparency feature instead of the highlighter tool to make the word, "August" stand out for this question.

This time I wanted the students to focus their attention on the number of "Saturdays" in August.

On this slide I "highlighted" the year 2013.  I also used the shape tool to make the star that is seen on the calendar.

I "highlighted" a row on the calendar to show the number of days in one full week.

On this slide I alternated the colors in each row to make the "full" weeks in August show up.

All the days within the month are "highlighted" on this slide.

Using symbols and keys are important mapping skills for early elementary children to develop.  (This question is not included in the PDF file.)

July Calendar Activities That Support Common Core Standards

It's almost July so I thought I'd make a freebie for you.  Are you teaching summer school?  Maybe you can use this next month.  It partially aligns with the "Measurement & Data" strand with the first grade Common Core Standards - Represent and interpret data.  CCSS.Math.Content1.MD.C.4.  Here's what my packet includes:
1.  Blank July calendar for students to write the numerals in the correct boxes.  (To facilitate higher level thinking, the blank calendar could also be used by the children to draw their own images, key, and questions with.)
2.  Partially blank July calendar for students to fill in the missing numerals.
3.  July image calendar with pictures located on specified dates.  (The images symbolize fictitious events that will take place in the month of July.)
4.  Eight questions related to the calendar with images.

The questions are printed on two pages.  The first sheet has a key displayed at the top that briefly describes the events in relation to the pictures displayed on the calendar.  The questions will require the students to refer to their own copy of the July image calendar.  Additionally, they will need to use the key that is displayed on the first sheet that the questions are printed on.  Some of the questions are designed for the students to make inferences.  All questions are in a multiple choice format.  While this activity is great for the month of July, you could use this file any month during the school year when working on calendar skills.  Please be aware that the small images on the image calendar may print light.  This may be a result of the original graphic size being significantly reduced by me.  The text and graphics come close to the left and right side of the pages.  Please be mindful of this as you prepare to print copies.

Here's everything you get in this file.  Click the words:  July 2013 Calendar Activities.

Here are some close-ups of the file above.
This is the image calendar.  It has pictures on specified dates which symbolize events that will take place.

The image above shows page one of the questions along with the picture key.

This is page 2 of the questions page.  Students need to refer to both the key on page 1 and the image calendar.
This is the July 2013 calendar that is partially completed with numerals.  Students fill in the missing numerals.
This is the blank July 2013 calendar.  Students write the missing numerals in the appropriate boxes.
If you have SMART Notebook software and a SMART board in your classroom, check back in a day or so for another free file designed to compliment this one. The SMART file will have some of the pages from this file scanned on to it. There may also be a SMART Response activity which can be used as a question & answer activity if you don't use SMART Responders.

Thank you to Laura Strickland of "My Cute Graphics" for all the images used to create this free product. Without her gifts, this product would not be possible. View her website at: mycutegraphics.com
Some of the numeral font components used to create the partially completed numeric calendar were from Fonts 4 Teachers. View their website at fonts4teachers.com

June Calendar 2013 SMART Notebook File Freebie

Hi again!  I thought I would add a little something extra to the June calendar printable sheets.  This is a copy of the calendar as a SMART Notebook file.  It will permit you to show the children the calendar in large view as they use their printable copies.

SMART boards are a great visual tool for the teacher to use.  They are also a fantastic modeling tool!

Provide each child a copy of the printable calendar so that all children in your class are activity engaged as you display the copy of the calendar on the SMART board.  Scroll down to yesterday's post to get the printable pages.  I've included a few markers the kids can slide into the appropriate dates when you are marking events on the calendar.  You will need to have SMART Notebook 11 software installed on your computer for the file to work properly.

June Calendar Skills Printables

It's June!  It's June!
Summer will be here soon!
Did I speak too soon?

We are so close to the end of the school year that I can smell it now!  How many more weeks of school do you have?  Is your last day before Memorial Day?  For some of us in the United States, school is still in session well into June.  A few fortunate folks get to have school all year through!

If you're part of the "School-In-June-Club", you might like the freebies I made to help first graders with calendar skills.   The first freebie shown is a June 2013 with the numerals printed on the calendar.  The second freebie another June 2013 calendar.  This one has most of the numerals missing.  The children can write in the missing numerals.  The final item is a mixed review of a few calendar concepts.

Calendar concepts align with the Common Core standards for the first grade math under the Measurement and Data strand:  CCSS.Math.Content1.MD.C.4

When using the June calendar with your students, the teacher can dictate information to the children.  Then have the children draw a symbol in the appropriate boxes.  Your students will need to draw small pictures as there are six rows in the June calendar I created this year.  Here are a few ideas of what you could mark on a June calendar:

*Change the word in bold italic to fit your needs.

1. Say, "Fathers' Day is on June 16th. Draw a fish on June 16th."

2. Say, "The first day of summer is June 21st.  Draw a sun on your calendar for June 21st."

3.  Say, "Our field day is scheduled for June (your date).  Draw a water balloon on June (your date)."

4. Say, "The awards ceremony is scheduled for June (your date). Draw a star on June (your date)."

5. Say, "The last day of school is June (your date). Draw a sad face on the calendar for June (your date)."

6. Say, "The first day of summer vacation is June (your date). Draw a happy face on the calendar for June (your date)."

For additional depth and complexity, change the language of your dictation.  Here are examples of how the first two dictations could be modified:

1.  Say, "Fathers' Day is on the third Sunday in June. Draw a fish on Fathers' Day."

2.   Say, "The first day of summer is the third Friday in June. Draw a sun on your calendar for the first day of summer."

Aren't the kids cute in the calendar?   I compressed the images above which make them appear a little blurry.  However this seems to help load the page more quickly.  I used graphics from Laura Strickland at Mycutegraphics.com to create the calendars. For the calendar with the missing numerals, I used a font style called, "ABC Print" from Fonts4teachers.com.  I like this font because the appearance of the numerals are consistent with the formation taught in early grades.
