Free Patriotic Songs and Crossword Puzzles for Fourth of July

Start your Fourth of July with the sound of music—patriotic music, that is! If you need a quick activity for summer school, a Fourth of July classroom celebration, or a patriotic music lesson, these free American patriotic songs crossword puzzles are easy to print and use.

Patriotic Songs Included

This free resource includes crossword puzzles for three familiar American patriotic songs:
  • My Country, 'Tis of Thee
  • You're a Grand Old Flag
  • The Star-Spangled Banner
Each puzzle uses selected lyrics from the song. Students read the song clues, figure out the missing word, and write the letters in the crossword boxes. Some answers go across, and some go down, so students get a little puzzle practice while working with patriotic song lyrics.

An Easy Classroom Idea

Before students begin, sing one of the songs together as a class. Then let students complete the matching crossword puzzle with a partner. That keeps the activity simple, meaningful, and fun. Students hear the song first, then use the lyrics to help solve the puzzle. If you are short on time, use just one song and one crossword puzzle. Save the others for another day.

A Mini Vocabulary Moment

Older patriotic songs sometimes include words students may not know. For example, in You're a Grand Old Flag, the word auld means old. A small vocabulary moment like this can help students better understand what they are singing.
